Hope everyone's doing well. As I'm writing this we're cruisin' through Nashville headed to Texas. Telisha's driving and Annabelle (the real road dog!) is asleep in the back of the Mobile Clubhouse. Things couldn't be better... other than gas prices, which send me into small fits of rage every time we pass a billboard with an even higher number than the last one.

Anyway- in an effort to think about something other than that, Telisha and I have been talking about you guys. Yep, you. We've had some really good shows lately, and a lot of the reason is because a bunch of ya'll have either sent your friends out to see us or drug them along with you when you came out to see us. I can't express how much that means to us. it's the only way we can make this work, and we really appreciate it more than you know. We'd really like to find a way to thank you for it!

So with that in mind we've got an idea. We're really expanding our touring and playing in a bunch of new places. The good news about that is that we're hopefully getting ready to make a bunch of new fans and friends. The bad news is that we might not know a lot of people in the places we're heading to. That's where you come in. We're calling it the "Rope Around America" campaign! It's simple. At all of our shows, we've got a little clipboard where we collect email addresses. All you have to do is send your friends, or drag your friends, to our show. Then all they have to do is write YOUR name on the clipboard by the email blank! Whoever gets their name written down the most times between now and July 1st wins. See? Simple. Oh- what do you win? More good news. Telisha and I are going back into the studio at the end of this Summer. That still puts the new release WAY off, but the grand prize winner will have their name mentioned in a song on the record! I'm not kidding! We're really going to do this. It's just how much we appreciate your help.

So- to give you a running start I've pasted a bunch of our upcoming shows below. Of course there are more on the website, so go there too. (www.DandTW.com/tour.html) Even if you don't live in any of these places, SURELY you know someone close to some of them. Send them out! Do whatever you gotta do. The only real rule is just don't cheat- One person=one name=one point. We don't have any Michigan or Florida dates between now and July, but we're in negotiations, and hopefully we'll have it all worked out in a fair way by the conventio.... uh... recording.

Mar 20, 2008 Thursday 6:00 PM Whole Foods Market Austin, TX With Idgy Vaughn!
Mar 21, 2008 Friday 9:00 PM Anderson Fair Houston, TX
Mar 22, 2008 Saturday 8:00 PM Labyrinth Walk Coffeehouse Dallas, TX with Small Potatoes
Mar 25, 2008 Tuesday All Day University of Central Missouri - Social Work Conference Warrensburg, MO
Mar 28, 2008 Friday 7:00 PM House Concert Mineral Wells, TX
http://rafandsioux.com/house_concerts.html
Apr 3, 2008 Thursday 8:00 PM Mojo Risin' Coffeehouse Houston, TX
Apr 4, 2008 Friday 8:00 PM White Rock Coffee Dallas, TX
Apr 5, 2008 Saturday 8:00 PM The Bugle Boy LaGrange, TX
http://www.thebugleboy.com
Apr 11, 2008 Friday 8:00 PM Eden Hall Gleneden Beach, OR
http://www.edenhall.com
Apr 12, 2008 Saturday TBA Old Richmond Church Richmond, OR
Apr 18, 2008 Friday 8:00 PM Bongo Billy's Salida, CO
http://www.salidacafe.com
Apr 24, 2008 Thursday 7:30 PM The Birchmere Alexandria, VA
Opening for Joe Ely!
Apr 25, 2008 Friday 8:00 PM The Gravity Lounge Charlottesville, VA
With Danny Schmidt!

OK- That's it for now! I’m just one other person with an opinion. And opinions are like… uh… noses – everybody’s got one. But I figure I may as well air mine out. You’re welcome to do the same. This whole “shut up and sing” phenomenon is really strange to me. Politics, music, literature and art have always been intermingled, no matter what anyone tells you.

Anyway- different rant. Back to Obama. Here’s what it boils down to for me. There are some big issues on the table; Health care, the war in Iraq, education, and constitutional rights. I really think we need a universal, civilized, affordable, national health care plan, just like the rest of the ‘civilized’ world. So do both Obama and Clinton. I want to have our troops in Iraq return home ASAP. So do both Obama and Clinton. I want our public education to be properly funded and progressive and forward thinking. So do both Obama and Clinton. I believe in the constitution- from front to back, beginning to end. Particularly the Bill of Rights (yes, even the 2nd amendment—real Liberals like me support our right to bear arms). So do… well, they’re both with me on most of it, like free speech, privacy, right to a fair trial, personal liberties, church and state stuff. Things that have turned up missing over the past 7 years.

I could go on listing topics, “Green Collar” jobs, right to choice, minority rights, gay rights, etc., but that’s missing the point. There are two things that are at play here that I think we’re missing in the national democratic debate. One-- Hillary and Barack line up pretty darn close on almost every issue. Two—The president doesn’t just “say” something is law and it becomes law (unless you’re W, and you scribble out unconstitutional signing statements—but I digress). Things happen in Washington through cooperation and hard work. The minute differences in the policies both of them propose don’t add up to anything. It doesn’t matter. By the time either of them get anything through congress it will look a lot different than it does now.

So why do I care? Why am I excited about Obama? First off because he’s an exciting guy. Maybe that seems like a pretty soft reason to endorse a candidate, but think about it for a minute. In America, we’ve been disenfranchised with our politics pretty much since Watergate. I WANT to be excited about a candidate. I WANT other people to be excited. I WANT to hope for a better America, and I want to be inspired. People keep comparing him to JFK for a reason. He makes you feel good, and that’s not an entirely bad thing, is it? I’ve heard people try to detract from this point. They say it’s an “Obama-palooza” and that “he’s the next best thing to Hanna Montana and getting an iPod”. I suppose that means it’s a fad to be excited about him. He’s trendy, and he’s got all these young whipper-snappers excited about politics. I still haven’t heard anyone explain why that’s a bad thing, though.

Second, maybe it is time for just an itsy-bitsy revolution. Out with the old and in with the new. I love Hillary. I do. I hope she has a great and long political career ahead of her, just not as the President of the United States right now. This might upset some of you, and I hope it doesn’t, but here goes. When I watch them speak and debate, and when I watch their ads and read their press, I get a sense that Hillary is very intent on winning this election. On the other hand, I get the sense that Barack is very intent on leading this nation. To me there is a massive difference there. (And no, I’m not a sexist—not any more than Hillary supporters are racists.)

My third reason is that Barack really is a uniter and, whether it’s intentional or not, Hillary is a very polarizing subject. Notice I said “subject” and not “person”. Call it bad luck, or whatever, but your average every day republican HATES the Clintons. Sure, they all made a lot of money in the killer economy Bill provided for them in the 90’s, but that point gets missed. The Clintons were the first big target for the ‘Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” and it worked. Hillary was right. Now for better or for worse, as Machiavellian as this may sound, she unfortunately has to pay the price. This is something that through traveling I’ve learned “blue state” democrats don’t understand. Obama, on the other hand, actually has republicans voting for him in open primaries! Obama-cans! I’ve met some of these strange creatures and talked to them. There are several reasons why they do it. The first, and obvious, reason is the lack of a good choice on the republican ticket. The second is that they’re actually fed up with the neo-cons and want to get back to Goldwater and earlier style republicanism. The third is that, hey, the guy’s pretty cool. Something about him I just trust, and “like”. (I could write a whole other post on how so many good, honest republicans have been conned by the neo-cons into going along with them. I miss the old republicans- they were fun to debate. They generally meant well, even if they were wrong.) Anyway—I guess I feel like these qualities will help him actually get things done. Help him get some good cooperation from good hearted republicans. If this makes me sound naïve then so be it.

My forth reason I’ll keep short. I love his message. “In America, there has never been anything false about Hope!” God, it just gives me goose bumps! It’s so positive. So inspiring. So against my cynical nature to buy into it, but I CAN’T HELP IT! I do believe it. Damnit, YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!

Ok—so that’s it. I’ll close it out with this little story. My sister called me on her cell phone after leaving the polling station yesterday. The poor thing used to think she was a republican, then she saw the light, then it got dark again, and now I think she’s pretty much removed the blinders and is a full-fledged democrat. She isn’t as liberal as me (thank God—if everyone were as liberal as me I wouldn’t have anyone to argue politics with, which would remove VAST amounts of fun from my life!) but she believes in pretty much all the right things, as far as I can tell. Anyway, she called to tell me that it was the first time in her life that she had had an opportunity to cast a vote for a candidate that she really believed in. It felt good. It almost moved her to tears. It made me proud. It made me proud of her, and it also made me proud to be an American again, to know that yes, we can still do it. It’s been a while, but we’ve still got it. We can still be a shining beacon to the rest of the world.

Brushes with Greatness

Telisha and I had a night recently that we'll remember forever. It was just amazing. John Laird, or agent, landed us an opening spot for Charlie Louvin! We were pretty excited about it as soon as we heard about it, and as the date got closer the excitement just kept building. We actually started getting really nervous- I mean, we were going to MEET and OPEN FOR a country music legend. Member of the Grand Ol' Opry. Member of the Country Music Hall of Fame! His music, with his Brother, Ira, influenced so many others that you really can't listen to rock or country and not hear, at least indirectly, some influence from the Louvin Brothers. Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Buck Owens, the Beatles-- people who we all cite as our influences today--were all influenced by the Louvin Brothers.

Needless to say, the day of the show I was a wreck. Telisha and I were both just as nervous as we could be. We were on schedule to get to the venue early, but we didn't want to get their TOO early. We did a little drive-by and didn't see much life out in the parking lot so we decided to head down to a grocery store and buy a 6 pack of beer. Not that we needed beer, we just needed something to do, and you can always use beer.

After we'd twiddled our thumbs for what we thought was a acceptable time we finally pulled into the parking lot of the Handlebar in Greenville, SC. No sign of Charlie (story spoiler: Later on, he tells us to call him Charlie, not Mr. Louvin- just didn't want you to think we were being disrespectful!) or his band yet, so we load our stuff in, met the sound engineer, and sat down in the middle of the room and proceeded to twiddle our thumbs again.

The side door swings open - Telisha and I stand up nervously and just kinda walk around in circles, trying not to look anxious, but trying not to look bored either- hell, I don't know what we were trying to look. Anyway, the band finally comes comes in. It's like big scene in a movie. Third in line is Charlie, in his tennis shoes, blue jeans, button down shirt and cowboy hat, with a cigarette hanging from his lips. Telisha and I amble over and she says "Hello Mr. Louvin- we're very excited about tonight, it's a pleasure to meet you!" or something like that. He replied with "Boy, you sure are cute!" and turns and walks back out to the van. Cute. We stand there for a moment both feeling like we had just said "I carried a watermelon"

As it turns out, their bus had broken down. They had piled 4 of the 5 band members and as much gear as they could fit into a rental van to make it to the show. They were all just a bit tense from the situation, but all warmed up to Telisha and me pretty quickly. I'll skip all the details here, but we really connected with them all. Brent, their bass player, was interested in Telisha's bass, so we fooled around with that for a while. They did their sound check and we did ours. One cool thing in our part of the sound check- We were checking our vocals and my guitar to Telisha's mandolin. This left the bass just sitting there. Charlie walks over and picks it up, so we break into an old Hank Williams tune with Charlie Louvin playing bass! (<---incredible moment #1) After sound check and a little dinner, we've still got a few hours before the show. Bob Saxton is playing guitar with Charlie tonight, and he's sitting on stage running through some Merle Travis songs. It just sounds great. I wander over with my guitar and unsuccessfully try to steal some licks. Bob is just a SUPER nice guy and we talk about music for a while and Telisha wanders over into the conversation. Bob asks if we ever do any Patsy Cline songs. Of course we do! We do several! It's at this point that Bob let's us know that he used to PLAY GUITAR FOR PATSY CLINE.... and asks us what key we do Crazy in. We settle on Bb and he starts playing. I know some of you won't believe this, but Telisha quietly and timidly starts to sing. The quiet and timid don't last long and we sit there on stage playing and singing Crazy with a guy who used to play it with Patsy Cline! (<---incredible moment #2) What a thrill. The cool thing was that it really thrilled Bob as well. He said "Patsy would have liked that!" and proceeds to call Telisha "Miss Patsy" for the rest of the evening. We hadn't been planning on it, but after this we decide that we've got to put Crazy in our set list for the night so we can tell the audience that story. It's finally about time to get dressed for the show, so we do that and then go sit down backstage with Charlie and Brent. Brent is a pretty young guy, but a little older than Telisha and me, I'd guess. He's very aware of how cool it is that he gets to play and sing with Charlie every night. We sit there and listen to story after story out of Charlie. Just amazing things, some that I probably shouldn't repeat! He tells me to go get my guitar, he wants to sing some songs for us. I go get it and hand it to Brent, who, by the way, is a fantastic musician. They serenade us (well, Telisha, but I was in the room!) with some really cool old songs. Telisha sings one or two for them, too. So yeah, we're hanging out backstage jamming with Charlie Louvin! (<--#3, right?) Now it's time for us to take the stage. I honestly don't remember what we played, or in what order. It was just such a rush. Like I said earlier, though, we did put Crazy in the list to play. We told the story to the audience, and they all thought it was a cool story, too. Not to brag, but we kinda had 'em in the palm of our hands. So we start into Crazy, pretty confident that we're really gonna kill 'em with it. About three bars into it I catch something out of the corner of my eye- Bob walks out on stage with us and fires up his amp, grabs his guitar, and dives right in! WOW!! He follows our arrangement (which, he informed us earlier, is different from Patsys) and we give him a solo in the middle. It's just beautiful. We get to the end of the song, do the final "...for loving......... youuuuuuuuuu....." and let Bob put a really tasteful, pretty tag on the end of it. Telisha and I just start jumping up and down in excitement, cheering with the rest of the crowd. (<---#4, almost too much, huh?) We shake Bobs hand and hug him and thank him for doing that. He smiles and tells us he really enjoyed it, waves at the crowd, and heads back stage again. We make it to the end of our set, just completely full of energy, and head backstage ourselves. We decide at that point that no matter what else happens tonight, it was worth it. Nothing could bring us down. We pull ourselves together and head out to the back of the room to watch the main part of the show. If you've heard the new Charlie Louvin record and thought that it sounds as good as it does because of studio tricks, you're wrong. His voice sounds fantastic. Every note was spot on and loaded full of honest emotion. It was just a fantastic show. Charlie announced that he had had a great time, thanked everyone for coming out, and said he was going to do his last song. He had told Telisha earlier backstage that if she knew a harmony part to anything he was singing, she should hop up on stage and join in. Of course she knew harmony parts on lots of the songs he'd played but hadn't gotten up the nerve. The last song was "Cash On the Barrel Head". I looked at her and said "If you don't go out there right now, you'll regret it for the rest of your life." That was all the prodding she needed, and she made it to the microphone by the chorus, just in time to join in. It sounded great, and I'd give anything if we'd been recording that show. They finished up the song, and Charlie was just grinning ear to ear. He looked at Telisha and said "Come here, Darlin'" and held his arms out for her. He squezed his arm around her shoulder, held the microphone between them, and sang a benediction to the audience. Telisha really didn't know the words to what he was singing, but she could add in a nice little harmony on the ends of the pharses. It was really cool. (<---I think that's 5, 6, and 7)

So that's it. Well, not quite- we did hang around backstage with Charlie and his band a little longer, trading email addresses and so forth. A few more stories and a few more jokes. Out in the hallway between the dressing rooms and the exit door, away from everyone else, Brent made a very profound statement to us. If I included it in this post, it would be #8 in the incredible moment tally, but I think we're going to keep that one just for ourselves. Our own little private moment that we'll never forget. We said our goodbyes, hugged, promised to stay in touch, and headed for the Waffle House to try and calm down a bit.

So that's our night with Charlie Louvin. Memories we'll carry forever. Thanks for reading- Sorry this one ended up so long! Just too much to say....
Doug

Beck & Andres Got Married (and I helped!)

A few weeks ago I got to do something really cool. I got to preform the wedding ceremony for my sister and her now husband. It was a pretty exciting moment, and pretty surreal. It's a long story and not all that interesting explaining how I got the credentials to be able to do it, so I'll just skip that part. Several of the people who were there and some that weren't have asked me to email them my "sermon" from that day for Becki and Andres. I decided it would be easier to just post it here in the blog for you all to read. So here are my notes! Enjoy!

"It’s exciting for me today to get the chance to perform this ceremony, not only because Becki’s my sister, but also because Andres is my friend, and I think I have at least a little bit to do with Becki and Andres being together in the first place

Several years back, Telisha and I were playing music almost every weekend at a little Italian restaurant in Collinsville called the Capri Café. The Capri was actually owned by a couple from Venezuela, and we got to be friends with the owners. We also got to be friends with another native Venezuelan who spent some time there, Andres.

Of course, as it is with all our friends, Andres also got to know the rest of our family. Eventually, though, it seemed like Andres was spending more time with my sister than the rest of us. At the time Becki was living in Raleigh, so that was quite a feat. They both assured us for months and months that no, they weren’t dating, they were just friends- they just liked spending time together. But Love is patient, and sure enough, over time, it became obvious to us all that that they were indeed in the middle of a budding romance.

I wanted to just speak briefly about the verse we just heard from the bible, from 1st Corinthians Chapter 13. I think no matter what your religious background is, that’s a pretty strong text. Not only that, but it gives us a fantastic definition of love, something that can otherwise be rather difficult to define.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”.

Becki and Andres, I’d be willing to bet that if you asked any truly happily married couple what the secret to their marriage was, they would respond with something that could in one way or another be paraphrased as the above scripture.

Always be patient with each other.
Always be kind to one another.
Don’t be jealous- be sure to trust each other with all of your heart.
Let go of little things- don’t be angry at each other for every little thing that comes up- just get out a new roll of toilet paper and forget it.

Work hard to be closer to each other on each tomorrow than you were on each today. It won’t always be easy- it’s just impossible to make it through with out hard times, but if you protect each other, trust each other, and persevere, you’ll make it. Listen to each other and support each other.

Now, perhaps the most important part of that scripture – Love never fails. If you both promise to follow the above advice, this is the reward- love NEVER fails.
As your brother and your friend, I hope both of you remember that long after today as you look back on years and years of wonderful memories.
Now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

So there it is. It was a great day, and now I've got a new brother- in-law. Beck and Andres are back from their honeymoon now. Actually, right as I'm posting this, we're down at the coast with them and my parents for a long weekend. Looks like a nice sunny day. I think we're getting ready to head to the water, so I'll sign off for now since everyone else is ready to go. As usual, I'm last : )

Doug

Groooooovin'

Okay, Okay, I missed the month of May, but I'm back on track! We just had a fantastic trip through TN and TX. We put the RV to the ultimate test of major miles, major heat, and loads of stuff!
A week ago yesterday, we had the time of our lives groovin (literally)on stage with Kenny Malone! It was our Nashville performance debut at The Douglas Corner, and we had a great time. If you don't know Kenny Malone, I encourage you to check him out. He plays percussion with almost everyone in Nashville, and I assure you he is no average drummer. Doug and I have a grand time listening to old Don Williams music on satellite radio, and trying to predict whether or not Kenny is playing on that particular cut. There's a definite "essence" to Kenny's playing. If you've heard him at all, you know what I'm talking about. Not only is he (in my humble opinion) the absolute best percussionist in the world, he's also the closest thing to Buddha I know. Doug and I just love being around Kenny. He exudes positivity. I challenge anyone to try not to smile when Kenny Malone walks into the room!
The TX part of our trip was part business/part play. We were heading down to Austin for our friends', Kathy and Derek's wedding. The festivities began on Friday night at the roller skating rink. We were all joking about it being hard to believe that it'd been 20 years since most of us had been on these crazy rolling contraptions. It's not exactly like riding a bike, but it did come back relatively quickly. Kathy and Derek had a beautiful wedding, and it was good to catch up with some friends we hadn't seen in far too long.
We took two days (11 hours each) to drive home. Time to clean the R.V. and stock up for our next road adventure!

Turning the Corner

So, check this out. I'm turning the big 3-0 this weekend. I know, some of you don't think it's a very big deal, but it's my first major milestone (besides 21), and I'm excited! Birthdays are a fantastic time to celebrate who you are, who you've been, and certainly, who you hope to one day be. I've always enjoyed a birthday, and am excited to celebrate those of my friends and family, too. My father-in-law shares a close birthday with me that was also significant this year (I won't give it away). As I look back on these short 30 years, I think about some pretty amazing things. I think about friends I used to have, places I've visited, outfits I should never have worn, and events (both happy and traumatic) that have shaped this 30 year old woman. I feel that at this time in my life, my path is right, and I'm happy to keep moving forward.

All that being said, Doug asked if he could start refering to me as "his old lady" now, I suggested that he not.

T

Duo Bliss

Hello folks! So I fell slightly off the wagon and had no post for February. Give me a break, it was a short month, and the end really sneaks up on you.
We did have a fantastic experience in February, at The Folk Alliance in Memphis. This was our third year attending, and it was fantastic. We were lucky enough to be included in a DUO CO-OP, organized by Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart. They got 9 duos together, we all pitched in a little money, and the Co-Op was represented by an exhibition hall booth, a showcasing room, and an ad in the Folk Alliance program. It doesn't get much "folkier" than that. People . . . people helping people. . . are the luckiest (okay, I'll stop). I'm listing the websites of the duos that participated with us, because I think they're really worth checking out. Doug and I were honored to be in such great company over the weekend, and let me say that our little co-op certainly made a splash at the conference.

Stacey Earle & Mark Stuart (www.staceyandmark.com): If you don't know these folks, you really need to. Stacey and Mark have been our heroes for years. They are an inspiration to us, and we are unbelievably greatful to call them friends.

Small Potatoes (www.smallpotatoesmusic.com): These guys have a great reputation in the folk world, and we can see why! We were proud to be associated with such a talented duo.

Jeff & Vida (www.jeffandvida.com): We met Jeff and Vida last year, and immediately felt a kinship. Jeff is a hot picker, and Vida's voice and command of the stage is astounding.

The Laws (www.thelaws.ca): John and Michele Law form this duo that proves country music has not all gone to hell in a handbasket. Once you hear their playing, harmonies, and heartbreaking country tunes, you'll understand what's been missing for years on the Nashville Scene.

The Milroys (www.themilroys.com): CJ & John are fantastic! Doug and I have been singing their songs ever since we got home. Great Writers and fantastic delivery, what more could you ask for?

Beucoup Blue (www.beaucoupblue.com): This father-son duo from Philadelphia will knock your socks off! When you hear these two play together, you know it's something in their genes! Only family can sound like that!

Annie and Rod Capps (www.anniecapps.com): Not only are Annie and Rod a fantastically talented duo, Annie worked WAY OVERTIME, preparing the promotional materials for the Duo Co-OP and they looked fabulous! Annie sings about life, and makes you either wish you were there, or mourn for the character being sung about. Annie's energy is contagious and Rod's playing is superb!

Sally Spring with Ted Lyons (www.sallyspring.com): We learned that Sally and Ted live only an hour away from us, and we're actually going to see them tonight! Sally is a petite little sweetheart, with a powerhouse voice that fills the room. Ted is a passionate player. When they sing it, you know they mean it!

We truly are thankful to have been associated with such a fantastic group of people. We've started friendships that will last for a long time, with folks that understand the ups and downs of this industry at least as much as we do. We recommend you checking out all of these fine duos and supporting them by passing along the word, buying a cd (or four), and catching a live show when they are nearby!

T

Goodbye "Little E"

Well, I'm officially within the resolution time frame that I created for myself. My last post was in December and it is still January (I realize that I'm pushing it a little). Doug and I post with bittersweet feelings today. Over the weekend, we traded our beloved Honda Element (Little E) for a Winnebago View (www.winnebagoview.com). We deliberated long and hard over the decision, but decided that with the amount of time we plan to be on the road in 2007, it was the only way to go!
Speaking of the amount of time we plan to be on the road, Doug and I have exciting news! We recently got signed to The Americana Agency with John Laird as our Booking Agent. We are thrilled about John accepting us on this fine roster (Diana Jones, Johnathan Byrd, SONiA and Disappear Fear & The Carolina Chocolate Drops). John's a great guy, and we couldn't be happier about this exciting partnership!
Back to Little E . . .
Our Element was a FANTASTIC vehicle. Since December of 2004, our Little E has traveled a whopping 61,000 miles with us. Talk about over the river and through the woods! It was a suprisingly emotional departure. We are nonetheless excited about our new travel arrangements, and have already enjoyed the RV in "Mobile Party" mode, traveling with some friends 30 minutes away for dinner and a movie.
We'll keep you posted on the RV traveling experience, and we'll be sure to let you know when she's earned her name.

T

Home for the Holidays!

Well, it's been quite some time since we last posted. I'd love to say it's because we're so busy we don't even have time to think, but that's not quite right. We're always busy, but I can't blame the lack of blogging on that. We've decided to make it a resolution to start blogging at least once a month in the coming year. Votes on how long that'll last?
We're home and excited to be so through the holidays. I've spent most of the day baking cookies as I dance around the kitchen to Christmas music among other, more danceable tunes. This is a tradition that I look forward to each year. I have a list of folks that I bless (or curse) with my cookies during the holiday season as a way to say thanks for being part of our lives. This year we're having peanut butter blossoms and preacher cookies (I forgot how finicky these little things can be). Pretty traditional recipes, which is not usually my style, but I'm feeling unusually traditional this year.
As we reflect on 2006, it's been a great year for us. We are thrilled we the reviews and radio play that Rope Around My Heart has received. We've met so many wonderful people in our travels. Folks that are as passionate about music as we are, and it's unbelievable to be able to do this for a living. We send out a huge hearfelt thanks to all of you that have come to our shows, requested our songs on the radio, voted for our HEMI, and otherwise been a part of our musical lives. We couldn't and wouldn't want to do this without you!
We're gearing up for a great 2007, will hopefully get back in the studio sometime during the year, and look forward to revisiting some of our favorite venues and making relationships with new places throughout the country, maybe we'll even fit in a European tour if all goes well . . .
There I go, making things busy again! We look forward to seeing you all soon!
Happy Holidays!

T & D

Just Fiddlin' Around!

Whoa! It’s been a while since we’ve posted to our blog. We just got back from a very relaxing and rejuvenating trip to one of our favorite places in the world – GALAX, VA! We went for the 71st (?) annual Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention. As most of you know, we go every year and we always have a GREAT time! This year was no exception. We went a day later than usual, and when we arrived, Annelle was sitting on the front porch of the shed, and Alice and Papa were in the shed playing some sweet, sweet music. Nanny was taking a nap. The dogs and family welcomed us, and the fun began! We shortly got out our own instruments and played along with Papa and Alice, which is always a treat – while Annelle tried to capture the spirit of the moment on film (well, digital). We headed down to the park after a bite to eat, and we were glad to be in the cool mountain air! Thursday night, we jammed with some folks a couple of campers down, and had a good time. We were so glad to have our dear friend Julie, and her sister Sasha, join us at the park. We turned in fairly early, but enjoyed some time around the table (at the farm) and said our “goodnights.” Friday morning, we awake to a cool mountain breeze, and Papa’s short-order breakfasts. I love this place. We play around a little with Sasha and Alice, then I head out for a run, while Doug, Douglas, Julie, and Sasha play a round (or 4) of cross-country Bocci. Patti arrives in the late afternoon, we have some pasta and puntenesca (that’s been cooking since yesterday in the sun), and some folks wimp out on going to the park in the dampness. Doug and I take Sasha and head down to the park with Nanny and Papa, thinking there might be some good deals on basses because of the weather. Unfortunately, the one we saw yesterday is sold. Doug says it wasn’t meant to be mine, and it turns out he’s right. We walk around in the muck a bit, and come across a tent with a 1970’s Englehart bass listed for sale, and the guy under the tent is playing “Magnolia Wind”. Is this a sign or what? We ask to see the bass when he’s done. She’s BEAUTIFUL. We play around a bit, then go get our instruments to jam with our new friend on bass. Not only is she BEAUTIFUL (did I already say that?), but she sounds so warm while we’re jamming. By the way, Lloyd (the bass man) is a great player and a super nice guy. Another young gentleman (Brad Harper) joins the jam on dobro, and we draw quite the rainy night crowd. It’s really fun! I’m pretty sure this is my bass, and we talk with Lloyd about the deal. He’s interested in what we’re doing (musically), and agrees to make us a little trade for a CD and T-shirt for the bass bag, and we talk about getting to the bank in the morning to finalize the transaction. Woo Hoo! I couldn’t be happier. Doug’s the best husband in the world – selling a saxophone for me to get a bass! Saturday morning, we’re up and around, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the rest of the gang. Today we expect Mike Maddox, the Lavery Family, and the Eskew’s. It’s kind of a cloudy day, but we’re really just enjoying a break in the weather. Not only are we anxious about our friends coming, but Doug and I have big business to take care of, so we head into town. We find Lloyd and his friend Butch, and head back to their tent to jam a little more and for me to become the official owner of the bass. Let me make a small note here. In this jam, there are three guitar players and they are all playing WAYNE HENDERSON guitars. We are so darn excited we can hardly contain ourselves. We hang out for a bit, then head back to the farm to check in on who’s arrived. We show off the new bass (sight and sound) and excitedly strike up a jam with Sasha, Steve and Georgeanne Lavery, Alice, and Mike Maddox. Even Big Doug likes the bass, and plays some fine tunes. This might be his instrument. The Eskews arrive, we dive into some barbecue and head down to the park. It is Saturday night, by the way! Matt Crance (our bass playin’ buddy) comes by to jam, and gives my new bass a little work out! It’s so fun to play with Matt. Sasha’s hangin’ in with her own bass, and picking up some good tips from him. We do a couple of “sets”, then my girl singing buddy, Marcie Horne stops by. I really like singing with her – she has a great voice, and she’s cute as a darn button. It’s a great Saturday night, and we really don’t want to stop, but everyone’s ready to head back to the farm, and we have been jamming ALL DAY! Everyone turns in after a night cap, except Mike, Doug, and me. We hang out and have another beer (or 4) and play a few more tunes together. Gambetti is such a fantastic place to be – everyone that’s ever come through really seems to get what it’s all about. We finally give in to our weak eyes around 3:00AM. Sunday morning sucks! Not really – it’s just the time that we all start heading out, one by one. I hate for the fun to end. Annelle fries up a little lunch time okra, and we hang out at the table and recap the great weekend. We thank Nanny and Papa for having such a great place for us to come home to, and tell them we can’t wait until we’re back there! Doug and I head home, and prepare for our upcoming trip in a couple of days.

T

Merlefest is OVER!

Hey Y'all! I just wanted to let everyone know what a WONDERFUL time we had at Merlefest this year. I was brought to tears on multiple occassions, including: Darrell & Wayne Scott set on the Austin stage, John Prine on the Watson stage, and Guy Clark on the Americana stage. I was telling someone that I couldn't miss Guy's set on the Americana stage because the last time I saw him on that very stage, it was a life-changing event. We saw a "ton" of other good music, and we are inspired to press on with our own career.
As usual, we enjoyed our evening jams (evening is a relative term). We're recovering and already looking forward to next year's Merlefest! Who knows, maybe we can talk them into letting Doug & I come to play!

RocketBOOM!!

Check it out! Friday night opening for Darrell Scott was a real blast. The rest of the weekend was spent in Fredericksburg, VA with a ton of great musicians from around there. The CD Release party in Martinsville was just great. We had friends in town from all over the place, just to come to the show. Plus all the folks from Martinsville. Thanks to all of you came- Telisha and I were really shocked at the turnout. We had no idea that we'd have that many people. Glad we didn't run out of beer! If anyone has good photos, send them to me and I'll put them on the website.

Big special thanks to Heidi, Karen, and Julie for running the merch table pretty much all night long. You guys took in a lot of cash! Thanks to Linda for carrying the tip jar around- that really generated QUITE a bit of revenue as well. Oh- and of course thanks to the folks who tossed in some money or bought CD's or shirts! My dad did a pretty good job as bartender and MC- so thanks dad. If things don't work out at Hooker, you've always got something to fall back on. Of course, mom, great job with the catering. Food was great and PLENTIFUL!! Jenny- Thanks for keeping us out of jail with the whole ABC thing. That would have really put a damper on the evening. Adele- Sorry you couldn't make it but, wow, thanks for the bubbly and the cups!!! Both were a real hit at the party! Especially with Becki- who wasn't quite so bubbly the next morning. Speaking of Beck, though, Thanks for singing with us! It's always a treat. You sounded great. Oh- and if we thank Beck, we need to thank Andres. He was not only very helpful in tracking down some pain medicine, but also he didn't seem to mind being the butt of a few jokes from stage! What a guy.... Of course, thanks to Maria for the fruit tray! yummy. Thanks to those of you who traveled a long way to come- Bill, Jean, Nick, Steve, George, PATTI, Tony, Heather, Larissa, John, Tom, Sheree... Oh- and George and Beth. Didn't everybody see George and Beth? Well, they were there. Honest! Thanks to Carolyn and Laura at the Artisan Center. What a GREAT PLACE!!! Folks, take advantage of this great resource. As soon as they get their website up and running, I'll put a link on our site. Steve- the lights worked out great. Thanks for the help there! Glad you finally got to put your undergraduate degree to work.

One more thing- Thanks to all of you who brought your kids. No, we're not a 'kids' band, and we have some dirty words and adult themes in our songs, but for some reason kids like us. And all the kids that were at the party seemed to have a really good time and actually listened to the music! They also really added a nice energy to the place. What fun.

Again- Thanks. Don't know what else to say. It's great to feel that love and support all around us. From the thundering applause after a song to a few small words of encouragement after the show, it all really makes a difference and keeps us going. You all mean more to us than you know.

Doug

This is it!

Here it is! Yep, we've been talking about it forever, now here it is. You can get your very own copy from www.cdbaby.com/dtwilliams. By the way, you can review it there as well after you buy it!

We're having a big party in Martinsville, Virginia, to celebrate. It's going to be Saturday, March 25th at 7:00 PM. We found a great place to have it- the Artisans Center. The address is 34 West Church Street- it's right across from the City Municipal Building downtown. It used to be a furniture store, but now the local community college (PHCC) runs it as classroom space. Pottery, stained glass, weaving, all kinds of really cool art. The best part is they're opening the front part up as a gallery/store for local artisans to sell their stuff! Pretty cool, huh? Telisha and I really hope a lot of you can come.

We've had a lot of fun on the road lately. We've meet some good friends in Maryland, Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina... We met a bunch of goofy high school kids in SC. They were pretty funny- we let one of them come up on stage and read a love poem. It had something to do with cocaine and llamas, but other than that I didn't really get it. 31 doesn't seem that old until you try to have a conversation with 17-18 year olds. Good kids, though- and musicians.

Oh- the recipe pages that MANY of you have missed so much will be back VERY SOON!! I've been working on them today, so maybe even by the end of the week we'll have a way to get to them.

That's all for now! Hope to see all of you soon!
Doug
www.DandTW.com

It's Almost HERE!!!

Can you believe how long it's been since I posted an entry here? Me either... I know, I know, I'm lazy. The good news, though, is that the new CD is ALMOST here! We've been having just a little bit of trouble getting the artwork right but now all that should be done and we're ready to go. It seems like every time I give someone an idea for what the release date will be something comes up and we have to move it further back. For that reason, I'm not going to post a date here- yet. Soon though.

We're also excited about getting back out on the road playing in front of people! The next two months look really great, with stops all over the place. Austin, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina, West-By-God-Virginia, Maryland... Should be a good time for us! Hope to see a lot of folks out there.

Today is New Years Eve. Tomorrow will be the first day of 2006. That sounds so futuristic to me- 2006. Just say it out loud a few times. Two thousand and six. Two double-ought six. Oh six. However you say it it sounds to me like it should be a long damn time from now- but it isn't! I do feel like this is going to be a good year, though. I hope the rest of you are as excited about it as I am. I also hope happiness and health follow all of you wherever you go- what else could you need, right?

Happy New Year!

Doug

The Ups, the Downs.....the Ups

I thought I'd post a little story about two of our recent gigs and how they went. The first one was a Wednesday night show at the Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville. We'd been excited about this one for a while- we were opening for Pete Anderson and Moot Davis. Pete's just a guitar god, a real hero of mine.

Two days before the show, I get this little stye on my left eye. The day of the show, it's more than a little stye. It's huge. If it were any bigger it would need it's own Social Security Number. Any of you that know me know how much I love going to the doctor, but Telisha called and made an appointment so I went, got some drugs, the whole nine yards. I get home from the pharmacy just in time to pack up the car and head to Charlottesville.

We get there and no Moot and Pete. We wait and wait- me wearing sunglasses (not because of my rock-star persona, mind you, but to try and keep from scaring small children with my new growth...). Finally the folks at the Gravity get a call from Moot- he's about an hour away. This will put him in Charlottesville in time for a 15 minute load in and 15 minute sound check before our show is supposed to start. Great. There goes my little elbow rubbin'/ass kissin' session with Pete before we start playing.

Of course, the show must go on, so T and Joe (one of the Gravity Lounge sound guys- super nice guy, BTW) and I decided that even though we were playing first, we'd go ahead and sound check. Everything sounded great, and we were ready to go as soon as Moot and Pete got there, loaded in, and did their quick little check.

About this time we look around and notice that a fairly decent crowd has gathered for a Wednesday night show! This is good! In spite of what a tough day it's been so far, Telisha and I are excited to hit the stage and play our little hearts out for the crowd. We head up, grab our instruments, tune up, smile at each other one time, and fire into the first song. Well, at least I did- but something just wasn't right... Something was missing... I get to the part of the song where I'm supposed to play my first solo (remember, now, PETE ANDERSON is in the crowd!)of the night and.... I play it- but there's nothing there to back me up- just these blank notes heading out into space. Telisha's Mandolin isn't putting out any signal at all! CRAP!! What? We just tuned up and it was working! We make it to the end of the song and a very forgiving crowd claps enthusiastically. Telisha and I take turns sweating and making jokes with the audience while the other one of us plugs and unplugs all kind of things. At this point we try to do a few songs that we don't use Mando for and between them return to our jokes/banter and crawling around on stage trying to get a signal out of that damn mandolin.

Eventually, about the time all the cords, patch cables, preamps and tuners look like a huge pile of spaghetti at Telisha's feet, we decide to forget it. Let's just go with what we've got and make the best of it. What this means is no solos for Doug tonight. All of our songs will sound a little more sparse than usual, but hey, like I said before, the show must go on!

So it does. We end up haveing a ball. No, it isn't the best we've ever played, but we did make a few new fans. I think everyone appreciated the jokes about T's mandolin playing skill as well. What it boils down to is that even on one of those nights where it just seems like everything that can go wrong does, it's still great. There's still nothing I love better than standing on stage beside Telisha and playing our songs together.

After the show, we got to spend a few minutes with a good friend of ours in Charlottesville talking. A few minutes turned into a few beers, and then she invited us back over to her place to spend the night so we wouldn't have to get a cheap hotel room. It's about 1 in the morning when she calls her husband and says "Honey, put some clean sheets on the bed- Doug and Telisha are going to come stay at our house tonight." So we head over to the Cottage and sit around and talk for a while with two GREAT friends, and finally hit the hay.

The next morning thier son gets up and says "I can't belive you brought the band home..." Wow, how many kids will ever get to say that in their lifetime? Anyway- to round up this long post- we have a great home-cooked omlet for breakfast and thank our friends before we head out to face another day, fortified not only by the food, but by our friendship as well.

NEXT- Bynum with Hooverville- and the conclusion of what happened to the BIG STYE!!!

Busy Busy Busy...

Ok, so I've been a slacker on the blog. I haven't posted anything since early August and here it is the end of September! I'll try to make up for it. The truth is, we have been pretty darn busy! We've played some really fun shows, and we've got some really fun things lined up in front of us as well.

This coming Wednesday night we're opening for Moot Davis and Pete Anderson at the Gravity in Charlottesville. Wow! I have to play my guitar in front of Pete Anderson! That's just a little scary, but it'll be a blast. I really like Moot's music and Pete is the perfect guy to be working with him. Telisha and I are both looking forward to meeting both of them. For those of you who don't know, Pete Anderson played with Dwight Yoakam for years, and was a big part of that signature Dwight Yoakam/Bakersfield sound.

We've also got a show on Friday we're pretty excited about. We'll be down in North Carolina (Bynum, to be exact, close to Durham) with our good buddies Hooverville. I know I go on and on about how much fun it is to play with them, but it really is. They're great guys and great musicians. They're also putting out a new record about the same time we are, and I've seen it and heard it! It's good- real good. We've been talking about trying to put together a little mini-tour with them in the Spring. I hope it works out.

That's just about all I've got right now. We're still working on all the business stuff with our new record, still working on the artwork and photography. It's coming along, though! We'll keep you updated.

Talk to you soon-
Doug

Home again...

We're home from Nashville. What a blast. The big surprise from the last post was that we got Darrell Scott to do some recording with us! To me, Darrell is just about as good as it gets- it was a real dream come true for both Telisha and me to listen in on Darrell rocking out to songs we'd written! We also got Eamon McLoughlin from the Greencards to come in and lay some killer fiddle tracks. I just can't get over how lucky we are! I've already talked about how great all the other musicians were, so I'll try not to just go on and on about it.

So now for the boring stuff- we're working on all the mastering, cover art, publicity and all that kind of stuff. We're still not sure of the release date, but it seems to be stretching further and further. I just can't wait to get it out there and let everyone listen to it! For now, though, it looks like it'll be early Winter.

I guess that's all for now. Telisha and I just got back to Martinsville after an amazing week in Nashville. I can't believe how GREAT the people we're working with are- we are soooo lucky. Things are sounding good and coming together fairly quickly. We recorded everything we've done so far live with me, Telisha and Kenny Malone. Several of the 'keepers' are first takes, and one is even the practice track where Telisha and I were just trying to teach the song to Kenny for the first time! Miles just happened to record it, and when we listened to it, we decided that it was the one to keep. Pretty amazing. Miles and Kenny are both a blast to work with- Kenny is a walking metronome and he's always tapping on something. For instance, here's a Kenny Malone quote- "Hey Miles, this is a great sounding stool, man!" We've also had the opportunity to spend some time with Dennis Crouch. What a KILLER bass player. Incredibly nice and humble guy as well- actually Kenny, Miles, and Dennis all are incredibly humble, especially considering all the greats they've worked with. We're talking Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Don Williams, Crystal Gayle, Darrell Scott, Tim O'Brien, Steve Earle.... the list just goes on and on. And now US? Like I said- we're lucky.

More soon!

Doug

Independence Day!!!

Well, all the bags are packed and we're getting ready to head out. We've got fresh strings on all our guitars and mandolins. Telisha and I think it's pretty cool that it just happens to be the 4th of July. We're pretty damn excited. Nashville- only 9 hours away! We start recording tomorrow afternoon at about 1:00 Nashville time. This week we'll be laying most of the basic tracks with me, Telisha, Kenny Malone (WOW!) and on Thursday, Dennis Crouch (Wow again!). We are truly lucky.

Other than that there really isn't a lot to say today- I promise when we get there, get our bearings, and get a few sessions finished I'll post some more. Assuming I can get to a computer. Ya'll take care- wish us luck.

Doug

I've been thinking...

Most people reading this (yes, both of you...) already know that Telisha and I quit our day jobs to pursue careers as musicians. I guess doing something like that puts one in a contemplative mood. It kinda makes you think about what all "this" is about, anyway. What really is important? It's amazing to me, now that I stop and think about it, how much time we all spend at work and how high it is on our priority list, yet how unimportant what most (no, not all) of us do on a daily basis really is. We're busy little bees. Worker ants. Sheep. Cattle. Moo.
Obviously deep down we know there's something else we're living for. I mean how many songs are there about computer networks? Or great poems about how nice the formatting on that financial report is? Or paintings of Dale, highlighting how efficiently he runs the ripsaw down in the plant? Not many. Sure, there's art about people at work, but it usually emphasizes the human aspect of it, not what a great employee or great worker someone is. If it didn't, though, would it be your favorite song? Quick thought experiment- What IS your favorite song? Why? Is it a hard driving rocker that gets your adrenalin pumping? A love song that reminds you of someone? A classical piece that just lets you drift off and get completely immersed in the rich, full sound of the symphony? Maybe it's a country heart-breaker. I'm sure some smart-ass will say their favorite song is "16 tons" or "John Henry was a Steen-drivin' Man," but really- your favorite? And aren't those really about the state of the human spirit more than anything else? I digress. The reason that song is your favorite song is because it means something personal to you- something from outside the day to day drudgery most likely. Unless the song you picked was by Toby Keith or Britney Spears, in which case it just means you're an idiot.

I'm not really sure what I'm driving at here, but I think this is it- Every now and then maybe it's a good idea to check your priorities. I don't think we all need to quit our jobs and head out to do something else, just think about what's really important to you. What do you want people to say at your funeral? "Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, we're gathered here today to pay our final respects to Doug. Boy, he sure could fix a computer." No thanks. If anyone MENTIONS computers at my funeral, I swear I will HAUNT you. And forget Casper, I'm talkin' Poltergeist style.

There are a lot of people I look up to. Some because of the personal sacrifices they've made in their lives to make life better for others (Thanks Mom and Dad). Some because of the things they do outside of their 'day jobs.' People who help out with charities, all kinds of things. Some because they made the choice to go for it- whatever "it"is, and whether they "made it" or not. Keep in mind, all of those things are hard work- I'm not saying we shouldn't work hard at what we do.

One more thing and I'll bring this ramble to a close. I'm going to do my best to constructively butcher a little parable I heard a long time ago- I hope I can do it some justice. I tried to google it to make sure I had it right, but couldn't find it, so this is my best attempt. I think it might be Marx, but can't remember for sure.

There's this fella who passes this other fella on the way to work. The other fella is just sitting on the riverbank, all laid back with his fishing pole. Disgusted by the lazy bum, our hero heads on in to the office- or wherever he works. That evening he passes by the same guy on the way home, who just smiles and waves as the good worker passes by. Day after day this happens and every day our protagonist gets more and more disgusted. Eventually he's had enough, so he says to the guy, "Hey- you know, I pass by here every day. All I've ever seen you do is sit there fishing. What are you doing with your life? Just wasting it away on the river bank! You're a disgrace!"

The fisherman sits there for a minute thinking. In reply he says, "Well, you know, I like to fish. I get plenty of food for my family. I'll never be rich, I guess, but we're happy. By the way, what are you in such a rush to get to every morning when you pass by here?"

Immediately, without even thinking, the worker snaps back, "I go to work every day! I work hard and I provide for my family. The poeple who work for me depend on me! I save my money so that when I'm old I can retire and sit on the river bank and fish!"

Anyway, make of if what you will. I'm going fishing. (actually, I don't really like to fish- but you get the idea...)

Hot Diggity Dog!

Those were the BEST Hot dogs I've ever had in my life!
